Chorography

The production of a unified body of work between two artists requires not only a shared ideology but also significant stylistic and technical cohesion. This has been accomplished with a collaborative project that explores our affinity for Sydney’s outer west. Bolstered by friendship and an appreciation for creative production, we have found a mutual voice that captures our deep connection for this locality and its landscape.

Cartographic symbols interacting with abstract forms explore the notion of place and define our connection to this picturesque region. At times we have obscured recognisable forms, in favour of working conceptually to provoke ideas about our relationship to this area. At other times, we have reduced the forms within the landscape to their most minimal to convey both simplicity and balance. Yet again, on other occasions, we have carefully captured pictorial truths, producing works with recognisable reference points.

This body of work is not only a significant representation of the Western Sydney region but it is also supports our deep desire to promote arts practice within this region and open up a dialogue of future possibilities.

In 2017, Annette Bukovinsky and I partook in an 18 week long studio residency with our former institution WSI TAFE, Nepean Arts and Design Centre. Our proposal, as stated above was about our connection to the Western Sydney region and the arts community. But there was another part to the proposal that was integral to the residency and that was the collaboration process. Having shared studio space and supported each other whilst studying for the Bachelor of Visual Arts, Annette and I had come to appreciate each others dedication, professionalism and passion for the arts, and despite our differences of character,  we easily found a common ground when producing art. This body of work, under the surface of the images is about friendship, respect, it is about personal growth as artists and as individuals.
