Tainted land

This body of work considers mankind’s impact on the natural environment through actions such as industrialisation, deforestation and waste disposal.

There can be an alluring aesthetic to a tainted land.

A warm sulphurous glow that saturates the landscape as sunlight pushes through polluted skies can transform the appearance of the world giving an idyllic ambiance.

The umber hue of bitumen used in these works creates a timeless romantic atmosphere, yet its use here also has a negative implication. The bitumen represents a contamination of the environment as a consequence of mankind’s actions.

These landscapes embody a dystopian situation. They express the feeling of disquiet, despair and isolation for a world in neglect.
