Psycho - biographical portraiture

This body of work, as part of my Master of Fine Arts studio research, explores the interconnection of arts and psychology and demonstrates how their interchangeability is mutually beneficial towards the progress of psychological assessment. I have applied psychological concepts and psychoanalytical methodologies into the creative process to direct and encourage self exploration and personal development both as an artist and as an individual.

My interest in psychology stems from a personal history with mental illness. As an understanding of my psychological state progressed I became curious about the origins and development of my personality, and from my increasing awareness I came to see that my artworks possessed an underlying psychology; a mirroring of my unconscious state.

In this studio practice I have used the drawing discipline of collage to create abstract sculptural forms that depict muscular and psychic armour; a concept informed by Wilhelm Reich's theory of character analysis. My psychological identity is evidenced through the spontaneous application of materials and the destruction and reconstruction of the artwork's form. Through materiality, a simulated history of experiences and subsequent psychic repressions will shape the artworks, thus creating a series of psycho-biographical portraiture's.
